First, bamboo is really part of the grass family and happens to comprise the largest section of that family. There are over 1,000 different species of bamboo plant as a whole. Whenever you think about bamboo, you probably think of the Asian culture, but it actually grows native all over the world. Most of it does grow inside the tropical regions of Asia, there is, however, some indigenous to the United States and even some in Africa.

In terms of the size of bamboo, the smallest plant just grows to about one foot in length while the largest varieties easily hits more than one hundred ft. Those would be the timber bamboo plants that you may have seen in the motion picture, ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.’

There are two main kinds of bamboo plants. The first is running bamboo which is actually known as ‘Monopodial’ after which there is clumping bamboo or ‘Sympodial.’ As you may possibly guess, the running bamboo is the group which is likely to take over everything and expands out of control. This is because of the way it’s root system spread underneath the ground.

The clumping bamboo on the other hand doesn’t have this capability and grows, asa its name suggess, in clumps. If you are going to purchase bamboo plants to assist with your landscaping then you have to ensure you get clumping bamboo or you will pay the price with constant maintenance, which possibly wouldn’t help anyhow.

The best part of bamboo and most distinguishable is their stalks or what are really called culms. While bamboo is growing, they are very fragile, yet as you probably have seen, these culms become very powerful and can be utilized for a lot of different things. As you have probably seen many of the most well-known uses of bamboo, other than that of the beauty of the plant, is for flooring, bedding, wall coverings, window blinds,  as well as clothes. Bamboo furniture is now very popular and many gardeners use it as a screening material. There are dozens of other applications almost anywhere you want to look.

As you can tell, bamboo is an interesting plant and I really did not get into half of it in this article. But going in the foreseeable future, I only expect that bamboo could have a larger and larger role in our lifestyles as we try to live cleaner lives that don’t create a big carbon foot print.

Bamboo grows quick and is harvested within seven years. After being harvested it grows back just as quick and in another seven years its ready to be harvested again. You can harvest bamboo plants up to 6 times in the time it takes an oak or maple tree to grow for harvesting. It reduces the eco impact on the planet greatly by harvesting this fast growing plant.

Bamboo in furniture offers many positive things as well. Bamboo beds for example offer a more exotic grain pattern than say an oak or ash bed. This exotic look is unique in appearance and will spice up the look of any bedroom. Bamboo is very strong. Just as strong as hard rock maple and will provide a lot of tensile strength to the furniture or products made from it. Bamboo beds will have this strength incorporated into the bamboo that makes up the frame of the bed which will provide many years of continued use.

Besides furniture and beds made from bamboo, bamboo has been used in flooring as well as other products. Valued for its strength and green culture bamboo offers an excellent alternative to many types of wood used in homes today. You may have just purchased a home or remodeled and found bamboo choices in many cabinets and flooring.

First, when creating a bamboo hedge you first want to determine the actual height that you want from your bamboo hedge. The screening height that you will obtain from your bamboo will depend on your climate conditions. Bamboo plants are very adaptive to various climates; however, the height that is listed for the bamboo plant is for optimal growing conditions. Example: if you want a hedge height of 10 feet (3.05 m) and you live in a cold climate region then you may want to select a bamboo plant with a maximum height of 18 - 20 feet (5.49 - 6.10 m). Keep in mind that if the bamboo plant starts to grow taller than you want it is very easy to control the height by pruning.

Also pay attention to the light requirements for the species that you choose in relation to the placement of your landscaping.

Second, you want to select 2 - 3 different types of bamboo plants. By doing this if one species in the hedge dies you still have 1 - 2 others still actively growing. If you would just plant one bamboo species and it dies you have just lost your entire screening. You could plant three different types of bamboo and adjust your height accordingly. It would bring a nice looking dynamic to your landscaping.

Third, when selecting the different species, you will want Leptomorph or running bamboo. When planting this type of bamboo you will want to install a barrier or to proactively practice rhizome control to prevent your bamboo from running into other people’s properties. Keep your neighbor in mind just because you want bamboo does not mean that your neighbor does. If you are in a wide open space with nothing around you then the barrier may not be a big issue for you.

Be sure to water thoroughly after planting. Keep in mind that you will want to water very liberally for the first few days to a week depending on your current weather conditions. After that you will want to keep the soil moist. Do not soak the bamboos roots and rhizome, this will cause them to rot and die.

Do not fertilize newly planted bamboo until the plants have taken hold. When the plants have taken the best type of fertilizer would be rotted cow or horse manure.

Growing and caring for bamboo is not a difficult task you just need a little time and TLC.

Bamboo Hedges, Fences and Living Walls
One of the most practical uses of bamboo is as a hedge or privacy wall. aside from looking better than plastic, metal or wood fences, a natural bamboo hedge is stronger, more durable and provides much better privacy.

Most of these rugs are made from mature 5 or 6 year old bamboo trees from the Anji mountains in China. The bamboo is cleaned and kiln dried to remove excess moisture and prevent warping. When the rugs are manufactured, they are fitted with non-slip rug pad backing to prevent skidding on smooth surfaces. They are also treated chemically to give them longer life and prevent fading. They are mostly for indoor use like area rugs or accent rugs.

Sometimes, the bamboo rugs are also used in closed outdoor areas like gazebos, screened porch etc. These bamboo rugs come in attractive colors and if maintained properly, the color can last for a lifetime.

Here are some tips for proper maintenance of bamboo rugs:

1. Keep bamboo rugs away from direct sunlight as far as possible, to avoid fading of colors.

2. If rug is to be used outdoors, make sure to store it inside after use.

3. Keep bamboo rugs away from water sources or rain. If bamboo rugs get wet, wipe them dry with a cloth, then hang them up to completely airdry. Never roll up a bamboo rug which is partially wet because it may lead to mold and mildew formation.

4. Finally, before laying the bamboo rug again on the floor, make sure that the floor area is completely dry.
