Bamboo is among the most versatile plants on our planet. Moreover it has got several curious facts that I think you will really find impressive. You should have a closer look at the plant itself and then you will appreciate why it’s used for so many goods that we use everyday.

First, bamboo is really part of the grass family and happens to comprise the largest section of that family. There are over 1,000 different species of bamboo plant as a whole. Whenever you think about bamboo, you probably think of the Asian culture, but it actually grows native all over the world. Most of it does grow inside the tropical regions of Asia, there is, however, some indigenous to the United States and even some in Africa.

In terms of the size of bamboo, the smallest plant just grows to about one foot in length while the largest varieties easily hits more than one hundred ft. Those would be the timber bamboo plants that you may have seen in the motion picture, ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.’

There are two main kinds of bamboo plants. The first is running bamboo which is actually known as ‘Monopodial’ after which there is clumping bamboo or ‘Sympodial.’ As you may possibly guess, the running bamboo is the group which is likely to take over everything and expands out of control. This is because of the way it’s root system spread underneath the ground.

The clumping bamboo on the other hand doesn’t have this capability and grows, asa its name suggess, in clumps. If you are going to purchase bamboo plants to assist with your landscaping then you have to ensure you get clumping bamboo or you will pay the price with constant maintenance, which possibly wouldn’t help anyhow.

The best part of bamboo and most distinguishable is their stalks or what are really called culms. While bamboo is growing, they are very fragile, yet as you probably have seen, these culms become very powerful and can be utilized for a lot of different things. As you have probably seen many of the most well-known uses of bamboo, other than that of the beauty of the plant, is for flooring, bedding, wall coverings, window blinds, as well as clothes. Bamboo furniture is now very popular and many gardeners use it as a screening material. There are dozens of other applications almost anywhere you want to look.

As you can tell, bamboo is an interesting plant and I really did not get into half of it in this article. But going in the foreseeable future, I only expect that bamboo could have a larger and larger role in our lifestyles as we try to live cleaner lives that don’t create a big carbon foot print.

Want to try your hand at growing bamboo plants, here is a way to do it…

For a light weight, trouble free knitting experience you need to use bamboo knitting needles.

These are made after extensive research was done, to make your knitting experience as smooth as possible. They are manufactured using a high technological processes. The companies that manufacturer these needles maintain, high quality, smooth finish and a perfect needle points. The high quality and standard they are manufactured to will make your knitting, an experience you will not forget.

By using bamboo knitting needles, you will minimize any possibility of splitting yarns, these needles also maintain a smooth flow of yarn over them, because of the smooth surface they have. This all helps to make your knitting trouble free. As these needles are of such a light weight your hands will not tire even after long hours of knitting.

The smooth wooden finish makes them glide over each other in perfect unison, hence minimizing the noise created by other needles such as aluminum ones. The amazing thing is that they become even smoother, the more you use them. Thus, knitting with these smooth bamboo needles all helps to make a comfortable experience, unlike the plastic and aluminum ones that are often used.

The bamboo knitting needles are made only out of the finest quality natural bamboo, that is grown in parts of Japan. The manufactures make a great effort to prepare bamboo needles of the highest standard. The strict quality control that is applied, assures that the bamboo needles prepared last longer and produce some of the most exquisite knitting patterns you can see.

The bamboos used to produce bamboo knitting needles are harvested during the cold winter months. The bamboo that is from these cold climates is far more resilient, and hard. During the winter the water contained in the bamboo is at a minimum. Thus, this avoids any staining, or mold.

During the winter months the woody fibers of the bamboo become tighter, hence these bamboo shoots are used to produce needles that are of strong density. The use of a fully matured bamboo shoot means, that when they are produced, they are strong and long lasting.

These bamboo needles are available in a variety of different shapes and sizes. The tapered point ensures that every loop is even, which leads to a beautiful stitch. This also makes them perfect for the beginner and the people who like the feel of a smooth warm bamboo passing between their fingers.

They are highly recommended to be used by beginners as they are not as slick as the plastic or metal ones. Thus, the possibility of the loops sliding from them becomes much less likely to happen. Professional knitters prefer bamboo knitting needles as they are able to knit quickly without any mistakes.

The flexibility, strength and comfort provided by them are second to none. Knitters can get a good quality bamboo needle at an affordable price. Unlike the wooden ones, that are much more expensive, and if they are homemade then it will cost you a lot to own a set of them.

Bamboo knitting needles are available in a wide range of varieties, such as double points, single point and circular types. The size of every needle is so accurate that you can use various same sized needles and still get a high quality uniform stitch. You can also purchase them with paperweight tops.

They also come with a bulb of glass containing beautiful flowers, or other patterns. They are often collected for their beauty and elegant look. The beautiful glass design adds an exquisite touch to your knitting experience.

Even though bamboo knitting needles are long lasting, if you are using them for long periods of time it would be beneficial to you, to sand their tips, doing so will keep them smooth. This also stops the needles from splitting yarns, and of course them breaking. Apart from this the bamboo needles virtually maintenance free.

Where do you locate your bamboo plant to harmonise both the needs of the plant and the effects of Bamboo Feng Shui.

Whether it is in their offices or their homes, very often many people place their Bamboo Feng Shui plants at the wrong places. Unknown to them, not only could they have downgraded their own Feng Shui "Qi" status instantly because of this, they could have also killed their lovely Bamboo Feng Shui plants which are supposed to be there to help enhance their Feng Shui in the first place.

Although most people have a place in mind as to where they want to plant their Feng Shui Bamboo, one should keep in mind that most large Feng Shui bamboos grow quicker and do their best in full sun. They must be given ample water, fertilizer, and protection from competitive weeds.

They will benefit from a windscreen and light shade when first planted as well. This is especially true of smaller plants. Fargesias, Thamnocalamus and Sasas do well with light to moderate shade. In fact the Fargesias and most Thamnocalamus are happier with some shade during the hottest part of the day.

Fargesia and Thamnocalamus are the hardiest of the clump type Feng Shui Bamboos. They can be planted without fear of spreading. Most other hardy bamboos can spread by their underground rhizomes and this must be taken into account when planting them. We recommend a barrier material of 60 mil by 30 inch deep, HDPE (high density polyethylene) to control their spread.

Please visit http://www.bamboofengshui.com/ for further advise on other Bamboo elements such as bamboo chimes, paintings, books and plants that can help enhance your feng shui.

Manufacturers are also becoming for eco aware in terms of their manufacturing practices and how they recycle the waste at their facilities. So what does this mean for us when we’re shopping for a new bed or other furniture?

Eco-friendly practices are considered any action that has a net positive result for our environment. There are many companies that employ efforts to both manufacturer or retail furniture products that meet positive eco guidelines. These can range from simple things like instituting policies for recycling paper or aluminum in the office. Actions such as reducing waste from production by streamlining manufacturer processing of raw materials to create less waste. Controlling factory emissions and reducing harmful pollutants going into the air by using natural alternatives.

Bamboo has been one such alternative in natural resources that has been gaining popularity. You might ask, well what does bamboo have to offer over woods like oak, maple, ash or any other resource? Let’s examine bamboo a little more closely. Bamboo itself is often confused as being a wood. It is in fact a plant or more specificly a grass. It grows in tall stalks or culms which grow very fast and get very hard. Usually within seven years the stalks of the bamboo plant are ready to be harvested and can then be processed into boards for construction.

Why is a fast growing plant a positive in being eco-friendly? Consider this for a moment. Woods like oak, maple and ash may take anywhere from fifty years or more to grow before they can be harvested. Once harvested, these trees will need to be replenished by planting seedlings which will then require another growth cycle of fifty or more years. Bamboo grows quick and is harvested within seven years. After being harvested it grows back just as quick and in another seven years its ready to be harvested again. You can harvest bamboo plants up to 6 times in the time it takes an oak or maple tree to grow for harvesting. It reduces the eco impact on the planet greatly by harvesting this fast growing plant.

Bamboo in furniture offers many positive things as well. Bamboo beds for example offer a more exotic grain pattern than say an oak or ash bed. This exotic look is unique in appearance and will spice up the look of any bedroom. Bamboo is very strong. Just as strong as hard rock maple and will provide a lot of tensile strength to the furniture or products made from it. Bamboo beds will have this strength incorporated into the bamboo that makes up the frame of the bed which will provide many years of continued use.

Besides furniture and beds made from bamboo, bamboo has been used in flooring as well as other products. Valued for its strength and green culture bamboo offers an excellent alternative to many types of wood used in homes today. You may have just purchased a home or remodeled and found bamboo choices in many cabinets and flooring.

Maybe you’re looking for a healthy eco-friendly alternative to wood products. Perhaps you’re interested in finding furniture that has a green approach to design and materials. Bamboo offers many advantages in the way of its growth cycle and harvesting. Bamboo grows quickly and can be harvested within seven years. Many species of wood take anywhere from fifty years or more before harvesting. Bamboo offers an exotic look in furniture, beds and flooring and will help create a unique appearance for any bedroom. Bamboo has much strength and durability which allows it to be used in everyday applications.

If you are an eco-friendly person or enjoy being more green in your life choices, bamboo is a healthy alternative when it comes to furniture, beds and any number of other uses for this unique plant. I would encourage you to learn more about bamboo and its uses in helping to make our world a greener one.

Are you planning to create a bamboo hedge to screen your yard for privacy? Well here are some sure-fire points you do not want to miss!

First, when creating a bamboo hedge you first want to determine the actual height that you want from your bamboo hedge. The screening height that you will obtain from your bamboo will depend on your climate conditions. Bamboo plants are very adaptive to various climates; however, the height that is listed for the bamboo plant is for optimal growing conditions. Example: if you want a hedge height of 10 feet (3.05 m) and you live in a cold climate region then you may want to select a bamboo plant with a maximum height of 18 - 20 feet (5.49 - 6.10 m). Keep in mind that if the bamboo plant starts to grow taller than you want it is very easy to control the height by pruning.

Also pay attention to the light requirements for the species that you choose in relation to the placement of your landscaping.

Second, you want to select 2 - 3 different types of bamboo plants. By doing this if one species in the hedge dies you still have 1 - 2 others still actively growing. If you would just plant one bamboo species and it dies you have just lost your entire screening. You could plant three different types of bamboo and adjust your height accordingly. It would bring a nice looking dynamic to your landscaping.

Third, when selecting the different species, you will want Leptomorph or running bamboo. When planting this type of bamboo you will want to install a barrier or to proactively practice rhizome control to prevent your bamboo from running into other people’s properties. Keep your neighbor in mind just because you want bamboo does not mean that your neighbor does. If you are in a wide open space with nothing around you then the barrier may not be a big issue for you.

Be sure to water thoroughly after planting. Keep in mind that you will want to water very liberally for the first few days to a week depending on your current weather conditions. After that you will want to keep the soil moist. Do not soak the bamboos roots and rhizome, this will cause them to rot and die.

Do not fertilize newly planted bamboo until the plants have taken hold. When the plants have taken the best type of fertilizer would be rotted cow or horse manure.

Growing and caring for bamboo is not a difficult task you just need a little time and TLC.

Bamboo Hedges, Fences and Living Walls
One of the most practical uses of bamboo is as a hedge or privacy wall. aside from looking better than plastic, metal or wood fences, a natural bamboo hedge is stronger, more durable and provides much better privacy.

Some Things to Remember…
Giant banyan trees, fresh water wells, bamboo hedges, lands of farms and orchards created a colourful and picturesque view of my village. You could smell fresh cut rice and see drying hay along roads during the harvest season.

                                                             How To Maintain Bamboo
Pruning is necessary to maintain the attractiveness of your bamboo. This includes the removal of older ugly culms, and any dead branches. The bamboo can also be trimmed in topiary fashion, or to form a hedge.

Today, it seems that everyone is an interior decorator - trying to design a living room - or an entire home - that represents who they are. There are numerous television programs - and entire TV networks - devoted to changing the way your home looks.

Luckily, there are some design tricks that have not been overused, and, if used properly, can set you apart from the crowd. One item that can do a lot to set your interior apart from the rest, is bamboo shades. Bamboo shades are an attractive, inexpensive, and - above all - highly versatile solution to your window covering dilemma!

Colors and Styles

There are many appealing features and aspects of bamboo shades, but probably the biggest reason why they are fast becoming the top choice of professional decorators and do-it-yourself designers is because of the wide color and style options available. Until recently, bamboo was not widely used in interior design in the United States. There might be some people who still think of the little green chutes of bamboo that they see on the receptionist’s desk at a doctor’s office or on the hostess stand at a sushi restaurant. But, the wood from bamboo chutes which is a bright yellow in its natural state, can be stained, painted, or left alone to provide a variety of colors. So, whether you’re looking to match the dark, muted hues of your library or den, or you’re trying to add even more splash to your modern living room or colorful sun porch, you can find bamboo shades to fit into your color palette.

And styles of bamboo shades are even more diverse than the colors. Although all bamboo shades are based on the same structural premise - sticks of bamboo placed side-by-side - the companies who make the shades create numerous styles by the way they cut, shape, and match the individual pieces of bamboo. So, again, whether you need a formal appearance for a more "serious" room, or maybe a fun design for a child’s room or play area, you can find a style of bamboo shade that matches the mood of the room.

Functionality

Other features of bamboo shades make them an excellent choice for your windows. The overall functionality of these shades cannot be surpassed by any other blind or shade on the market. The most common type of bamboo shade utilizes a pull cord, as with most traditional shades, which pulls the shade up to the top of the window. But, they can also be opened with a continuous chain or even a motorized lift! Because bamboo shades are woven together and connected as though they are one piece of material, there is no tangling to worry about as with traditional blinds, and dust collection is minimal. In addition, bamboo shades offer any level of light filtering. Some styles are more loosely woven to allow for more light to shine through, while other styles are more compact to block out almost all light. Bamboo shades can also be lined with a light-blocking material to keep all light out of the room.

Eco-Friendly

With a lot of focus these days on eco-friendly interior design, and sustainable home products, bamboo shades have become a very popular option for the "green" decorator. Bamboo, of course, is a naturally-occurring product, and because bamboo grows so rapidly, it replenishes itself very quickly. Plant products do not require the carbon output necessary to create the synthetic materials in more traditional blinds and shades. Wood shades can create an "organic" feel to your room or your entire home - providing a sense of warmth not readily apparent in a metal or plastic window covering. And, last, but definitely not least, because bamboo is rapid growth in the wild and thus, quite abundant, bamboo shades are often the most affordable products in any window or blind store. And, with today’s economic climate, who can complain about that? With so many options, and such great flexibility, perhaps it’s time you looked at bamboo shades for your home!

Japanese Bamboo baskets form a very old tradition dating back thousands of years. This article touches on the origins of both the plant and the uses for bamboo aside from a simple indoor bamboo plant.

If you’ve ever seen tall stalks of golden bamboo in a grove or in photographs, you might be surprised to learn that it is a grass. A very fast growing, tall grass. While ‘dwarf’ bamboo grows to less than a foot, some species actually grow 100 feet tall!

Bamboo is attractive, pliable and sturdy, and is the preferred plant used in the making of wicker furniture. (It’s also provides the preferred food of the Giant Panda, but that’s a different story.)

Once the wood has been properly treated to prevent insect infestation, bamboo forms a very tough hardwood that can be used in fences, canes, toys, musical instruments, clothing, and much more, including decorative baskets.

Bamboo grows in many countries around the world, such as China, Japan and Indonesia, and each country has its own traditional method of weaving baskets. So if you’re thinking of adding a decorative bamboo basket or two to your home decor, you can go with traditional designs of your own area, or purchase something unique from another country.

Baskets woven from bamboo are works of art in their own right, and can stand on their own as decorative pieces. But they are above all functional, and can be used for a variety of purposes, from holding various knicknackery to setting off plants or flowers placed within. Bamboo Baskets originally date back to the sixth century where they were used for alter offerings. Later in the sixteenth century they began to be used in tea ceremonys to display flowers.

Don’t just go into a local store and buy the first basket you see. If you search the web you can find hundreds of examples of intricately woven baskets that will amaze you with their beauty. Even if your home is not furnished with an ‘Oriental motif,’ a traditional Japanese basket is such a unique work of art that it will stand out and complement its surroundings.

Because bamboo baskets can be so beautiful, it’s no surprise that it takes a long time to learn the craft. It can take artists up to ten years just to learn to master the art of bamboo weaving. However, if you like to create your own baskets, don’t despair, there are plenty of resources which will show you how to work with bamboo.

Books such as The Basket Book: Over 30 Magnificent Baskets to Make and Enjoy, Handmade Baskets: From Nature’s Colorful Materials, and The Craft & Art of Bamboo: Projects for Home and Garden are written for the beginner and have simple designs to start with.

On the internet, bamboocraft is a website chock-full of links to every possible subject you could want to know about bamboo and the art of working with it and creating everything from furniture to baskets to clothing! It includes a message forum so like-minded artisans can get together to exchange stories, hints and techniques.

The American Bamboo Society americanbamboo is another excellent resource - and it provides links to societies around the world, from Mexico to Europe to Australia to China and Japan. There’s a vast network out there for those who’d like to learn how to make beautiful bamboo baskets…or appreciate those who have.

Who would have thought that the bamboo plant would have so many different uses. Here we explore yet another facinating way we can use bamboo.

More and more people are becoming environment conscious these days and are turning to eco-friendly products for their homes. One such product is the natural material rugs used as area rugs or accent rugs. Bamboo rug comes under this category. Bamboo rug is a very elegant, eco-friendly natural rug and is gaining popularity in recent days. The beautiful bamboo rug adds beauty to all types of flooring, including carpeted floors as well as hardwood, ceramic, vinyl and marble floors. They are durable and a classy addition to any type of home decor whether it is conventional and classic or contemporary and trendy.

Most of these rugs are made from mature 5 or 6 year old bamboo trees from the Anji mountains in China. The bamboo is cleaned and kiln dried to remove excess moisture and prevent warping. When the rugs are manufactured, they are fitted with non-slip rug pad backing to prevent skidding on smooth surfaces. They are also treated chemically to give them longer life and prevent fading. They are mostly for indoor use like area rugs or accent rugs.

Sometimes, the bamboo rugs are also used in closed outdoor areas like gazebos, screened porch etc. These bamboo rugs come in attractive colors and if maintained properly, the color can last for a lifetime.

Here are some tips for proper maintenance of bamboo rugs:

1. Keep bamboo rugs away from direct sunlight as far as possible, to avoid fading of colors.

2. If rug is to be used outdoors, make sure to store it inside after use.

3. Keep bamboo rugs away from water sources or rain. If bamboo rugs get wet, wipe them dry with a cloth, then hang them up to completely airdry. Never roll up a bamboo rug which is partially wet because it may lead to mold and mildew formation.

4. Finally, before laying the bamboo rug again on the floor, make sure that the floor area is completely dry.

These small steps can ensure the rug’s longevity. Besides being eco-friendly, the colorful bamboo rug can add a touch of class to any room in a home.

They also require very little water and they can survive drought conditions as well as flooding.

Bamboo plants are even beneficial for the atmosphere, releasing oxygen into the air. In fact, the amount of oxygen released from bamboo plants actually surpasses the amounts set free from trees.

Bamboo plants are easy to grow indoors as a household plant. Stick the bamboo stalk into a pot of loose gravel and water it once a week and it should propogate well. Growing bamboo from seed will also give good results and the root system will develop very quickly.

Bamboo plants are popular as garden plants as they create plush foliage that lends a tropical effect to the garden. Once grown, it is difficult to remove a bamboo plantation. There appears to be no end to the uses of bamboo which is now used in furniture, flooring, clothing and many other houshold decor products.

Bamboo plants are also known for flexibility and strength. Unbelievable as it may be its tensile strength compares to that of steel and therefore bamboo has been used in construction for centuries. The giant timber Bamboo, Phyllostachys Bambusoides originated in China and is widely used for making bamboo fences. Depending on the species Bamboo plants are often expensive to buy, and they are sometimes subject to root rot. Bamboo plants are able to survive in almost any environment with many species adapting well to both tropical and temperate climates. They are found from high mountains to river flood plains.

Roots are similar to those of palms, long and fibrous. Bamboo plants are generally easy to grow, although they will require generous watering when first planted. They are also widely available online, in nurseries and even in department stores. They are popular as decoration and are used as privacy screens in the yard as they can grow rather tall.

Large Bamboo plants can be expensive to ship because of their bulk weight shipping can run as much as 1/3 of the cost of the plant, depending upon the destination. Bamboo plants are in fact grasses and are associated with wheat and turf species. Classification is difficult because bamboos flower so rarely, so many of these plants share a convoluted ancestry in the botanical references.
